Augustinerhof Nürnberg
Modern geometry in a historic city centre
The Augustinerhof, situated in the heart of Nuremberg’s old town, is a building complex that combines a variety of functions. Alongside the Deutsches Museum, it houses hotels, restaurants and retail outlets. The location is particularly attractive: a spacious inner courtyard opens out onto the banks of the River Pegnitz and is accessible from various sides. A particular eye-catcher is the bronze-coloured standing seam roof by Kalzip, which combines modern design with traditional craftsmanship. Constructed in a classic standing seam style, it reflects the historic context, whilst the aluminium panels adapt to the custom-designed roof geometry.
Following the city skyline
The historic surroundings of Nuremberg’s Old Town are home to many old buildings with steep tiled roofs. When planning the Augustinerhof, care was taken to ensure that the height of the building and its roof blend in with the surrounding architecture. Together with the building’s distinctive form, this has created a complex roofscape consisting of several sloping surfaces that meet at different angles. The frequently folded, polygonal roof blends into the adjacent roofscape as a modern interpretation. In contrast, the choice of materials is more closely aligned with historical models.
Traditional craftsmanship – modern materials
The foldable aluminium from Kalzip, finished in bronze anodised, was installed using traditional sheet metalworking techniques by the team at Lummel GmbH & Co.KG from Karlstadt. The skilled craftsmen opted for a double standing seam joint, which gives the roof a subtle appearance. The many different roof surfaces presented a particular challenge during the roofing work. A total of 26 individual surfaces with varying angles of inclination, eaves and ridge heights had to be taken into account, as did the dormers, skylights and other building connections. The roof drainage system was also complex: the internal rain gutters run flush with the façade and are thus barely visible from a pedestrian’s perspective.
Everything matches
To maintain visual integrity, all connecting components are made from the same material in the same Bronze B40 colour. The dormers were integrated into the building shell during the structural work and professionally clad by the tradespeople with powder-coated aluminium before being connected to the roof surface. There are also exhaust and supply air systems at various points on the roof. Above these sections, grating in the same colour scheme was installed instead of standing seam panels – this ensures the functionality of the systems without compromising the appearance. Furthermore, the specialist tradesmen installed a system-compatible snow guard system as well as walkways and access grating, which, thanks to the matching colour scheme, virtually disappear into the roof.
Thoughtfully considered. KALZIP.
