From 31 October to 12 November, political and business leaders will discuss the world of tomorrow in Glasgow at the invitation of the host countries Great Britain and Italy. At the 26th UN Climate Change Conference, effective ways to protect the global climate are on the agenda — a topic that concerns not only us, but also future generations.
Kalzip’s contribution to the UN Climate Change Conference
The venue has been chosen to be symbolic: The Scottish Events Campus on the banks of the River Clyde impresses with its modern, forward-looking architecture and functional, sustainable choice of materials.
The eye-catcher on the site is the SEC Armadillo, originally known as the Clyde Auditorium. The multi-functional hall is particularly striking due to its roof construction designed by the world-renowned Architects Foster and Partners. The Architects inspiration for the design is a series of interlocking ships hulls, in reference to the Clyde’s shipbuilding heritage.
This roof construction was manufactured by Kalzip, with the roof geometry formed using convex curved Kalzip aluminium profiled sheets with a stucco embossed surface finish. These Kalzip sheets provide a sustainable roof over the heads of state for this year’s UN Climate Change Conference.

Why an aluminium roof?
Contrary to its sometimes poor reputation, aluminium is one of the most sustainable building materials when used in the correct circumstances. The reasons for this are its tremendous longevity and its particularly high recyclable content. One figure illustrates this particularly well: to date, around 75% of the aluminium ever produced is still in use, most of it in the automotive and construction sectors. Here, at Kalzip also make our contribution to the sustainable use of the material by ensuring that our façade and roof constructions use as few material combinations as possible. This means that after many years of use, our aluminium sheets can be dismantled and recycled without any detriment to the material. This is where the special quality of the metal comes into its own: aluminium can be recycled infinitely without any loss of quality or performance.
Functional with enormous design potential
During its use, aluminium provides a low-maintenance, highly durable weather protection shell for a wide variety of buildings and is a material of choice for new developments.
With so much form and functionality, the aesthetic appearance cannot be ignored. This is demonstrated by the SEC Armadillo, and countless other Kalzip projects around the world, from everyday office buildings to spectacular stadia and concert hall constructions such as the O2 Arena in London, the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans and the Olympic Sports Center in Nanjing. Here and for many other projects, Kalzip have been able to set standards for architectural excellence in the past and will continue to contribute with our aluminium constructions ensuring that they will not have to be disposed of as hazardous waste in the future.
