New stadium on the horizon: Arena MRV in Belo Horizonte
The Estádio Presidente Elias Kalil – better known as the Arena MRV – is a new football stadium in the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte. The new building is not only the home stadium for the Atlético Mineiro football club, but also a flagship for the city: the modern design with its wide block stripes draws attention from afar.
Inaugurated in April 2023 and officially opened for matches in August 2023, the arena has quickly become a central hub for football matches and other events in the region. Equipped with advanced technology and with a strong focus on environmental friendliness, the MRV Arena sets a new standard for sports venues worldwide.
Sustainable planning
The design comes from the architecture firm Fakasvolgöyi Arquitetura from Belo Horizonte. It combines sleek, modern aesthetics with sustainable building practices. The project includes various environmental initiatives, such as the creation of cycle paths, health centres and an extensive reforestation project.
Sustainability has also been incorporated into the building design itself. The Kalzip roof system complements this plan with its standing seam profiles made from up to 95% recycled aluminium. The building envelope offers a durable, weather-resistant solution that also improves the stadium’s energy efficiency. The flexibility of the system allowed for seamless integration into the design of the stadium, creating a continuous, aesthetically pleasing surface that enhances both functionality and visual appeal.
Production on site
During the preliminary planning of the roof at Kalzip, the decision was made to produce the roofing membranes on site. This strategic move ensured precision, reduced logistical challenges and enabled real-time adjustments during installation. This ensured that the customised conical and curved sheets for the roof system met the architectural and environmental specifications. In addition, Rafael Fernandez, roll form operator at Kalzip, was stationed in Belo Horizonte to oversee production and ensure that the highest standards of quality and efficiency were met.
