Tested for Extreme Weather

The Kalzip Standing Seam Roof successfully passes comprehensive hurricane testing

How does a roof perform when exposed to

hurricane-force winds, wind-driven rain and airborne debris?

Extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and more intense around the world. Hurricanes, severe storms and heavy rainfall place enormous demands on building envelopes.

To ensure reliable performance under these conditions, roofing systems are tested in specialised laboratories using realistic, large-scale test procedures.

For this reason, the Kalzip Standing Seam Roof System was tested at the Farabaugh Engineering and Testing Laboratory (USA) as part of a comprehensive hurricane performance programme.

Why are roofs tested for hurricanes?

A roof does much more than keep rain out. During extreme weather events it must withstand:

High wind uplift forces
Wind-driven rain
Impact from airborne debris
Long-term structural loading

Large-scale testing allows engineers to evaluate the performance of the complete roofing system under realistic conditions.

The Test Programme

The Kalzip Standing Seam Roof was tested in accordance with the Florida Testing Application Standards (TAS).

The testing programme simulated several critical weather scenarios that roofing systems may experience during hurricanes.

The assessment included:

  • Structural performance under static air pressure differences
  • Impact resistance against windborne debris
  • Resistance to wind-driven rain under severe crosswind conditions

The Individual Tests

Structural Performance Test

The roof system was subjected to high static air pressure differences to simulate the uplift forces generated during extreme wind events.

Impact Resistance Test

The system was then tested for its ability to withstand impacts from debris carried by hurricane-force winds.

Wind-Driven Rain Test

Finally, the roof was evaluated for water penetration while exposed simultaneously to heavy rain and strong crosswinds.

The Result

The Kalzip Standing Seam Roof successfully passed all test procedures.

The results demonstrate the system’s performance under the requirements of the Florida Testing Application Standards (TAS).

This confirms the roof system’s ability to perform reliably under demanding extreme weather conditions.

Why does this matter?

Extreme weather resilience is becoming an increasingly important consideration in modern building design. Alongside aesthetics, sustainability and energy performance, architects and specifiers must also consider the long-term durability and resilience of the building envelope.

Independent system testing provides valuable technical evidence to support informed specification decisions.

More than a Test for Florida

Although the testing programme was developed to meet the requirements of the State of Florida, its relevance extends far beyond one geographic region.

The results demonstrate how the roofing system performs under exceptional environmental loads—providing valuable insights for projects in regions increasingly affected by severe weather events.

The Kalzip Standing Seam Roof

By successfully completing this comprehensive hurricane testing programme, the Kalzip Standing Seam Roof demonstrates its suitability for projects where durability, resilience and long-term performance are essential design considerations.
