Radial Roof Geometry for York Minster’s Heritage Quad

Within the historic precinct surrounding York Minster, the Gothic cathedral in York, England, the Heritage Quad provides dedicated space for the traditional crafts involved in the conservation of the building. Designed by Tonkin Liu Architects and completed in 2024, the building brings together workshops and training facilities around a central courtyard. Its parabolically curved roof responds to the historic setting while giving the new building a distinct architectural identity.

Contemporary Architecture in a Historic Setting
The Heritage Quad was conceived as a workshop and training facility for apprentices, stonemasons and other craftspeople involved in the conservation of York Minster. Tonkin Liu Architects’ design arranges the various workshop and training spaces around a central courtyard.
The building’s square plan is overlaid by a roof surface that reconciles a circular geometry with the orthogonal footprint below. Its undulating perimeter responds to the vaulted forms of the historic surroundings, while the radial arrangement of the roof sheets directs rainwater towards the courtyard for drainage.

Bespoke Engineering for a Complex Roof Geometry
Working within the York Minster precinct while the cathedral remained fully operational required precise planning and a carefully coordinated construction programme. The architecture presented an additional technical challenge: the aluminium standing seam sheets taper towards the courtyard, with each sheet individually shaped and therefore unsuitable for standardised manufacture. To meet these requirements, Kalzip provided a system that could be accurately designed, individually fabricated and prepared for efficient installation on site. Working with roofing contractor Axis Group, Kalzip developed a digital design and fabrication process in which every sheet was modelled in three dimensions, cut to millimetre accuracy and delivered to site ready for installation.
Installation of the standing seam sheets was closely coordinated with Kalzip, aligning the digital model, supporting structure and actual site conditions. This reduced the need for on-site adjustments and made the construction sequence more predictable, allowing the cathedral to remain fully operational throughout the works.
Bronze B40 Aluminium Standing Seam Roof
The material specification also responds to the historic character of the site. The roof uses the Kalzip 65/400 aluminium standing seam system in a material thickness of one millimetre, meeting the project’s technical requirements. The sheets are finished in AluPlusPatina Bronze B40.
Its matt, pre-weathered appearance establishes a material relationship with the limestone architecture of York Minster and allows the new building to sit quietly within its historic surroundings.

Structure and Roof Build-Up
The double-curved roof is supported by a glulam structure engineered by Webb Yates Engineers and fabricated by Buckland Timber. Kalzip’s Flexicon support system enables the standing seam sheets to accommodate the complex geometry while maintaining consistent alignment across the roof surface, allowing the design intent to be realised with precision. The roof build-up also incorporates Kalzip Plus 40 insulation and a Clear VCL vapour control layer. Together, these provide thermal continuity and the required moisture protection. The resulting layered construction of timber, plywood and aluminium is designed for long-term durability.
The Heritage Quad provides a workshop and training centre for the traditional crafts that contribute to the long-term conservation of York Minster. The project demonstrates how a complex roof geometry can be realised through coordinated digital design, bespoke prefabrication and an adaptable standing seam system. The resulting roof combines architectural intent with a high-performance construction while maintaining a restrained presence within its historic context.
Thoughtfully considered. KALZIP.
