Max von Laue Gymnasium secondary school in Koblenz
New façade, new attitude – when renovation makes a statement
A 1950s school building undergoing transformation
The Max von Laue Gymnasium in Koblenz is not just another school building undergoing energy-efficient renovation. It is an example of how bold architecture, sustainable construction and quality craftsmanship can rewrite a piece of urban history – without denying the building’s heritage.
The school building from the 1950s is currently undergoing extensive modernisation. In addition to technical upgrades and the redesign of the interior, the focus is on one thing in particular: the new building envelope. It forms the architectural backbone of the transformation – and it stands out.
Showing its colours: royal blue as a statement
Instead of the former grid-patterned plaster façade with sgraffito technique, a curtain-type aluminium façade now characterises the appearance. The bold royal blue with white accents not only gives the building a new identity, but also conveys a clear message: education can be visible, bold and future-oriented.
Technology that impresses: the FC façade system from Kalzip
The proven Kalzip FC façade system is used here – a solution that is equally appreciated by architects and fabricators. The concealed aluminium façade impresses with its clear lines, economical processing and long-lasting weather resistance. It is a system that scores highly in school construction, where there are high demands on load-bearing capacity and low maintenance.
Planning with finesse
The architectural design is by fries architekten in Vallendar. Their design concept focuses on creating a bridge between the existing building and modernity. The new façade is not a break with the past, but rather a further development in terms of structure, materials and colour scheme.
Precise implementation – craftsmanship from Mendig
S+T Fassaden GmbH from Mendig is responsible for the precise craftsmanship. The company not only has extensive experience in working with curtain wall systems, but also a keen eye for detail – an essential quality feature when it comes to creating colourful building envelopes.
More than just looks: focus on sustainability and functionality
The new façade is part of a comprehensive renovation concept that includes architectural upgrades as well as energy and safety improvements:
- Improved insulation values thanks to new façade structures and windows
- Increased fire protection in line with current standards
- Modern building technology for contemporary teaching
- Good indoor air quality and lighting conditions for a healthy learning environment
A strong signal for educational construction
With the comprehensive renovation of the Max von Laue Gymnasium, the city of Koblenz is underlining its strategy of investing in education – not only in terms of functionality, but also in terms of architecture. The project shows how much potential existing buildings have when bold design, well thought-out planning and precise craftsmanship come together.
