From Koblenz to the World: Kalzip Becomes Part of the Permanent Exhibition “Schaffensland”

What do Koblenz, Rhineland-Palatinate, and the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid have in common? More than one might think at first glance. Starting August 14, 2026, the Landesmuseum Koblenz at Ehrenbreitstein Fortress will present its new permanent exhibition, “Land of Creativity – People. Stories. Work.” Spanning approximately 1,200 square meters, the exhibition tells the story of people, work, and economic change in Rhineland-Palatinate—from the early 19th century to the present day. It deliberately focuses on the companies and “hidden champions” that today have an impact far beyond the state’s borders. And this is exactly where Kalzip becomes part of the story. This is something special for us. Our connection to Koblenz goes back a long way: Kalzip production began here as early as 1967, and since 1972, our headquarters—including production and administration—has been located at our current site. From Koblenz, our roofing and façade systems have found their way into architectural projects all over the world. One of these projects will serve as a prime example of this international connection in the exhibition: the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid. Kalzip was involved in the construction of the new roof as part of the stadium’s extensive renovation. Approximately 30,900 square meters of roof area were constructed using Kalzip systems. The project was designed by L35 Architects, gmp Architekten, and Ribas & Ribas. We are particularly pleased that visitors to “Schaffensland” can take a look behind the scenes of this extraordinary architectural project through images from the Bernabéu’s construction phase. These images reveal what is often no longer visible behind a finished building envelope: planning, technical precision, collaboration—and the realization of a challenging architectural vision. The fact that a project from Madrid is now finding its way back to Koblenz holds a special appeal for us. From Rhineland-Palatinate out into the international architectural scene—and back to the Rhine as part of the exhibition. We are proud to be represented in “Schaffensland” and to have the opportunity to share a piece of Rhineland-Palatinate’s industrial and architectural history. After all, behind internationally renowned buildings lie not only grand designs, but also companies, expertise, and people who make these designs a reality. We look forward to experiencing Kalzip from a whole new perspective at the Landesmuseum Koblenz at Ehrenbreitstein Fortress starting August 14, 2026. Well-designed. KALZIP. Hangar Modernisierung für Luftschiff Theo in Mülheim an der Ruhr

A Hangar for Theo: Retirement is the gold standard for “Theo” the airship. The airship “Theo” is considered the unofficial mascot of the Ruhr area, as this airship circled above the Ruhr metropolises for almost 50 years. In 2024, the moving landmark will retire. To ensure that “Theo” feels comfortable on the ground in the future, its old hangar has been enlarged, renovated, modernized, and raised to the latest ecological standard. The new, climate-neutral multifunctional hangar can now be used as a venue for 1500 people, surpasses all structural and static requirements with minimal maintenance effort, and is incomparably durable. Indeed, it sounds like a Kalzip project. The fact that Kalzip was able to meet this unusual challenge was made possible by an expert committee of the International Association for Metal Construction, which recommended that only a building envelope made of 95% recycled aluminium standing seam profiles could meet the extensive climate neutrality requirements of the building concept. This called for a climate-neutral building that meets the Gold Standard requirements of the Society for Sustainable Building. But those who know Kalzip know that it is precisely this type of challenge that drives the company. A 6,500 m2 custom-made structure made of 557,000 kilos of wood and 1,500 wood components. Since the supporting structure of the new hangar consisted exclusively of wood, no cornerstone was laid in 2022, but a “foundation wood-laying.” The term fits well because a total of 557t of wood from domestic forests was used as a sustainable and renewable building material for the supporting structure. The special feature of this spectacular supporting structure is that a total of 592 nodes were joined together in the main load-bearing areas without a single piece of steel in a truss span of 42m. This required not only tremendous physical effort and extensive construction practical experience from a well-rehearsed team of specialists but also countless work steps at 6500 m2. A total of around 1500 wood components were manufactured and assembled with millimetre precision. A prerequisite for the professional and efficient installation of the profile sheets at lofty heights was not only the demanding three-dimensional planning and produced the tapered profiled and curved aluminium profiles in advance, but also the precise installation of all fastening elements, both in the elongated, simply curved area and at the quarter-sphere, three-dimensionally shaped hall endings. Due to the dome-shaped form of the new hangar, it was not possible to erect scaffolding, so the aluminium sheets had to be mounted at lofty heights using mobile work platforms. This required individual protective clothing, a safety harness, and a safety net for fall protection. One system, many solutions. The complex ecological requirements and the special building geometry require a flexible system that can cope with all challenges and adapt to them. The substructure system FlexiCon RR80 from Kalzip exceeds these requirements. In combination with the installed aluminium standing seam profile, it compensates for existing height differences in the load-bearing surface and also guarantees efficient installation because the installation of the aluminium profile sheets and their insulation is carried out in one work step. To ensure a distortion-free, temperature-related expansion movement of the profile sheets, the clip of the standing seam profile was aligned three-dimensionally during installation on the saddle. The system developed by Kalzip is also used in dome roofs, flue towers, or other three-dimensional buildings. The FlexiCon system allows the aluminium sheets to be mounted horizontally and vertically with uniform rounding. An important visual feature of the airship hangar. Another advantage of the composite clip system used is that no thermal bridges occur, which would impair the energy efficiency of the building. From beginning to end, a green thread Theo is proud of the eco-friendliness of his new multifunctional hangar. At the beginning of the construction work, 8000m3 of excavation material was crushed on site and reused as the foundation for the project. The targeted use of resource-saving materials and the reuse of building materials saved a total of over 156t of CO2. The two 400m2 large and 72t (without aluminium cover) heavy door wings are powered by four 80PS electric motors. The aluminium cover can easily be dismantled and added to the recycling cycle after the end of its useful life or it can be reused and repurposed in suitable areas of the building. Through this future-oriented construction method, it is sustainably ensured that Theo and his visitors of all generations will enjoy his new hangar for many years to come. Thoughtfully considered. KALZIP – „Subway in Grossreuth Nuremberg“

The sky beneath the earth. Usually, you have to look at the sky to see Kalzip’s work, but it’s a different story with the new terminus of the U3 underground line in Nuremberg. As part of urban development framework planning, the Nuremberg district of Großreuth near Schweinau is to be redensified in the long term – this process began with the construction of an underground station, which was put into operation at the end of 2020. Upon entering the station, the visitor immediately notices that this station is different compared to other underground stations. Daylight reaches the platform through skylights, and lighting draws attention to the station in the evening. No dirty tiles in various shapes and formats are to be found here, it is not dark here – a 750m2 blue sky covered with individual clouds greets the passengers here. Divine installation technique and forward-thinking planning. Due to the fact that the motif consists of real, high-resolution photographs, the special challenge in this project was to develop a detailed installation plan with position numbers that would enable the executing company to install the aluminium profile panels, which had been coated in advance, without any confusion. During the fabrication of the pattern for sampling, it was determined that the side edges of the aluminium profiles also needed to be coated with the motif so that the joints blended into the overall appearance as inconspicuously as possible. A mapping process was then used to create, record, and catalogue the exact coating plan with a slight overlap. To compensate for inequalities and keep the overall construction low, grid click rails were installed, which also allow for easy replacement of damaged or soiled profiled panels. Given that local fire protection specifications also had to be complied with, all plastic parts and inlays were dispensed with during the installation of the profiled panels, and the suction effect of a train passing by at high speed was also taken into account.   Kalzip has thus once again completed a future-oriented and trend-setting construction project which, due to its sustainable design, will be enjoyed by passengers for a long time to come and which can serve as a successful example of future-oriented urban planning. Thoughtfully considered. KALZIP. KALZIP. Sustainable production halls at TRUMPF

New buildings on the company premises of TRUMPF near Stuttgart: Industrial buildings as electricity supplier Large module for small technology. This was the theme of Kalzip’s involvement in the completion of the Trumpf manufacturing halls in Ditzingen. Three halls were fitted with Kalzip roofs, which combine a modern design with an integrated solar roof solution. The company premises of TRUMPF in Ditzingen near Stuttgart Playing with angles and heights TRUMPF has been providing ready-made solutions in the fields of machine tools, laser technology, electronics, and power tools for almost 100 years. The architectural firm Barkow Leibinger from Berlin provided the design for the newly constructed buildings. Instead of the usual simple flat roofs, the architects opted for dynamic-looking roof construction. Slightly pitched gable roofs and butterfly roofs with slopes of 5° each alternate three to four times per hall and form a straight line at the ridge and eaves when viewed from above. The design from the Architekturgesellschaft Barkow Leibinger is playing with contrary angles Active use of roof space In addition, Kalzip contributed to a special feature with its roofing components. In contrast to other manufacturing halls, the new buildings in Ditzingen were largely covered with solar panels, which contribute to sustainable energy generation. The architects’ desire to achieve the highest possible utilisation of solar modules with a homogeneous surface area presented both the manufacturer Kalzip and the fabricators with challenges. Appearance and function are going hand in hand   Practical challenges in transport and assembly A further challenge was the special production in excess length. For the building project in Ditzingen, profiled sheets with a length of up to 28 metres and with up to 12 solar modules on one profile were created – making them the largest AluPlusSolar profiled sheets ever produced and delivered by Kalzip. The transport was correspondingly difficult: loaded onto an overlength lorry, the profiled sheets were permanently kept under surveillance by an escort vehicle belonging to the haulage company. In addition, a police escort accompanied the lorry on the route from the Kalzip plant in Koblenz via the motorway to the construction site in Ditzingen. Kalzip profiled sheets were installed as the final layer. Due to roof permeations and transitions, the sheets were produced in different lengths accordingly. To be able to connect the solar modules and with the inverter, the fitters had to install each panel individually, which required a special effort from the team: “We have installed Kalzip systems before, but never on this scale. Placed on the standing seam of the previous profiled panel, around 11 installers had to hold the panel at an angle so that the electrician could connect the wires underneath,” explains Tobias Brohmann. The dimension of the solar modules as a challenge on the construction side   Enough electricity for a whole village But all the hard work paid off. The highest possible utilisation of solar panels was achieved. Except for a few centimetres of edge strips and at roof intersections, solar panels have been installed on the roof surfaces of a total of about 15,200 m2 over the entire area. A total of around 10,000 panels achieve an output of 1,138.5 kWp – an amount of energy to supply 100 one-family houses with electricity – and thus ensure sustainable and ecological energy generation.   About Kalzip Kalzip sells and produces aluminium roof facade profiles for the areas of industrial construction, leisure facilities/sports facilities, transport and housing.
